Dog collar and lead

A collar and lead are two of the most familiar bits of dog gear, but there is still quite a lot of difference between one combination and another.

Some collars are light and fairly narrow. Others have broader bands or heavier hardware. Leads can vary in length, material and the type of clip used at the collar end.

Start with the Collar Size

Measure your dog's neck and use the sizing shown on the individual product page.

Two collars carrying the same size label can still have different adjustment ranges.

Width is worth checking as well.

A narrow collar can look quite light on a smaller dog, while a broader one has a much more substantial feel. The buckle and D-ring can add to that too, particularly when the hardware is quite large.

If your dog is still growing, have another look at the adjustment from time to time rather than assuming the original fit will stay the same.

What About the Lead?

A shorter lead keeps the dog physically closer to you. A longer one gives more distance between your hand and the collar.

Neither is automatically better. It depends on what you prefer and where the lead is likely to be used.

Have a look at the width of the lead too. A very slim lead can feel quite different in the hand from a broader one, even when both are the same length.

The clip at the end deserves a glance as well. Check how it attaches to the collar and whether its size looks in proportion to the D-ring.

They Don't Have to Match Exactly

A collar and lead can still look good together without being the same colour or pattern.

A plain lead can tone down a brighter collar, while a coloured lead can lift a simple design a bit.

Sometimes keeping one part plain actually works better than matching everything.

On the lead itself, check the clip and how it opens. Different clips can feel quite different in the hand, especially if you regularly take the lead on and off.

Every so often, have a quick look over these areas for obvious wear. That includes the collar buckle, lead clip, D-ring and any stitching close to the hardware.

Identification Tags

A collar is also the usual place to attach an identification tag.

If you use one, have a look at where the tag will sit in relation to the lead ring and buckle. On smaller collars, several pieces of hardware can end up crowded into quite a small area.

Keeping the Collar and Lead Clean

Cleaning depends mostly on the material.

A nylon collar and lead won't necessarily need the same treatment as leather ones, so check the care information supplied with the particular product.

Mud tends to collect around buckles, clips and stitched sections, while leads often pick up dirt along the section closest to the dog.

There is no need to make cleaning complicated. Deal with the dirt when you notice it and follow the instructions for the material you have.

While everything is off, it is also a useful time to look over the lead and collar for anything that has become badly worn.

Then look at the width, adjustment and fastening. For the lead, compare the length, width and clip.
